Celebration VI Exclusive Pins and Magnets with Return of the Jedi Art from Vintage Cheinco Tins

September 8, 2012

I’ve posted about several of the vintage tin products put out by Cheinco in the past, including the Jabba and Rebo Band tins, the Return of the Jedi tin box with handles, and the Return of the Jedi tin tray. They made quite a number of them, so even if you narrow it down to just the Jabba-related ones, there are still a couple that I don’t have. I like them a lot. They’re sturdy (unlike some of the modern tins that I’ve bought) and generally not very expensive, so I was excited to see that they were going to be releasing products at Celebration VI using Mark Mancini’s original art.

The buttons above have the art that was used on the lids for Cheinco’s various tins, which works well since they were circular to begin with. I’m a little disappointed with how small they are (only 1″ in diameter), which makes it a little tough to see the artwork. But the smaller buttons might be better if you’re actually going to wear them. They’d look good on a convention lanyard in particular, which may be what they had in mind.

They also released these two magnets using Mancini’s art. They’re about 3.5″ wide. With these and the magnet that used the art from the vintage Kenner ROTJ action figure case, it’s nice to see some vintage art being used in new ways.

Celebration VI Exclusive Droid Hunt Badge and Print by Spencer Brinkerhoff

September 7, 2012

The 501st Legion has been holding a “Droid Hunt” event at the last few celebrations. There’s a video here that explains it in detail, but essentially you would go to the 501st’s booth to get a badge that you would wear the following day. If a costumed member of the 501st saw it and said the “pass phrase,” you had to surrender your badge, but would be presented with a raffle ticket that might be used to win prizes.

They had a number of different artists design badges for the event at Celebration VI, but this particular one was created by Spencer Brinkerhoff. (Spencer did a Jabba the Hutt sketchcard for me a while ago, and also made a Jabba-themed print for Celebration V, called “That Bad, Huh?“)

Spencer went the extra mile by making an entire print that he gave away at the convention. Avfin, a member at the Sideshow Freaks Forum, is the one who hooked me up with all of my Celebration VI exclusives, and he was nice enough to pick this up for me even though I didn’t know it existed. Since I have the previous print from Spencer, I’m very glad I didn’t miss out on these.

As you can see, it shows Salacious Crumb pulling out C-3PO’s eye and the aftermath of Leia’s cruel premeditated attack on Jabba… 😉 The image below isn’t the best, since the print came rolled and it was a little tricky to get a good shot of it, but you get the idea.

News: Sideshow Collectibles’ Lomrokk the Gamorrean Executioner Statue Up For Preorder Next Week

September 7, 2012

[Photo from Averone’s photos of SDCC]

Sideshow Collectibles has started a new “Mythos” line of 1/5 scale statues that shows Star Wars characters in ways that weren’t seen in movies, but might have been hinted at. For example, they’re going to have a statue of Obi-Wan Kenobi as he might have appeared between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

In this case, they’ve come up with a completely new character called Lomrokk. They’ve written a short story to introduce the character, but the concept is that Jabba used this particularly large and intelligent Gamorrean as his executioner before he had the rancor to take care of things like that. I’m a fan of Gamorreans, but the actual on-screen designs are more comical than intimidating. This guy, though, looks like a real badass.

The Mythos line is exclusive to Sideshow, so you can only get it by ordering direct. I imagine that I’ll have to put in my preorder next week.

501st Legion Belgian Garrison Sticker and Patch (Celebration VI)

September 6, 2012

This sticker and patch were given out at Celebration VI by the Belgian Garrison of the 501st. They appear to have been made by the “prospectors squad” but clicking on the link there just leads to you to a generic page at the moment. They’re both pretty cool designs with a lot of Jabba-specific imagery, although I’m not totally sure I understand how Jabba fits in with imperial troopers.

Celebration VI Exclusive “Baby’s First Bib” Baby Bib (With Bib Fortuna)

September 5, 2012

Yet another in our list of Celebration VI exclusives is this Bib Fortuna baby bib. Cute, although I always thought that a bib design that incorporated Bib’s lekku (head tentacles) could work well. This actually isn’t the first baby bib in my collection, although the other one is more of a craft item and not a commercial product.

Celebration VI Exclusive Magnet with Art from Vintage Return of the Jedi Figure Case

September 4, 2012

This is a large magnet (around 6″ wide) made using the original artwork from Kenner’s vintage Return of the Jedi action figure case. I still don’t have one of the actual cases, as they are relatively expensive and I haven’t yet found a good deal on one.

While you can’t really see it in the picture, it’s covered with a thick layer of acrylic, making rather substantial feeling. The magnet itself is also fairly powerful. They made versions for the figure cases from A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back as well.

Celebration VI Exclusive “Jabba’s Palace Maintenance” Patch

September 3, 2012

This patch is 3.5″ wide and is sort of a match for the Jabba’s Palace Maintenance Workman Shirt I posted about earlier. I was a little surprised to see that the workman shirt didn’t actually include this patch, instead using a transfer for the same design on the back.

Celebration VI Exclusive Jabba’s Palace Maintenance Workman Shirt

September 3, 2012

I mentioned in some of my earlier posts about Celebration VI exclusives that I had trouble finding info about the products before the convention, and that was never more true than with this shirt. I put all of my Googling skills to the test and all I could find was a text description of it. Since I wasn’t going to be at the convention, I ended up having to buy it sight unseen. I was a little wary about this, considering the shirt cost $60. I don’t really think it’s worth that, but it is pretty funny and there can’t be too many people who have them. I doubt I would wear it except maybe at a convention or gathering of Star Wars fans. Maybe next celebration, if I can make it…

The idea is that this shirt would be worn by one of the grunts at Jabba’s Palace — specifically the guy in charge of scooping up rancor poop. It’s similar in style to shirts worn by mechanics or maintenance men, with patches on the front.

The design on the back is a transfer.

I like the image of what appears to be Malakili holding a pooper-scooper.

“Waste technician” is cute, although part of me would have preferred that they put Malakili’s name on the shirt in a similar style, since many workman shirts have the owner’s name on a patch.

Inside the shirt.

Link: “Moves Like Jabba” Video from MADtv

September 2, 2012

A few months ago, I linked to a video parodying the Maroon 5 song “Moves like Jagger” and apparently MADtv also did a similar thing, only with animation. It’s a “behind the scenes” look at how one of Jabba’s Gamorrean Guards got his job (and how Lando got his). It’s pretty cute.

Celebration VI Exclusive Gamorrean Guard Piggy Bank by Think Geek

September 2, 2012

This is another Celebration VI exclusive, apparently made by Think Geek, although it’s not mentioned on their site in any way that I can see. It’s apparently made of ceramic and is freaking huge! For some reason I had assumed it would be a relatively small bank, but it’s more than 10″ tall and 11″ deep, and fairly heavy.

It’s a cute concept, but the execution is a little rough. It may be hard to tell from these photos, but many of the lines are wavy and vary in thickness, which makes it look a bit more like an art project than a commercial product. The paint seems a little tacky (sticky), and there are big rough patches on the tops of both of the ears, which makes me think that they stacked them up on top of each other in the factory at some point. Still, it looks pretty good from a distance.

Many of the “Gamorrean-like” aspects are actually sculpted, so it’s not like they just painted up an existing bank to look like a Gamorrean, which is good. As you might expect, there’s a slot in the top and a stopper in the bottom that would allow you to remove any change you put inside. I may be a Jabba collector, but I’ve pretty much got every Gamorrean Guard product ever made as well, so I was happy to get one of these.
