Micro Machines Action Fleet Rancor

February 14, 2010

This Rancor is in scale with the other Micro Machines figures. He has an opening mouth that allows him to swallow human-sized Micro Machines figures, which can be retrieved by flipping up a sort of trap door in his tail. He comes with a stand and Luke and Gamorrean Guard figures.

Jabba’s Rancor (2009 Target Exclusive)

February 14, 2010

The “Jabba’s Rancor” set was a Target-exclusive, and is without a doubt the best Rancor figure to date. When you compare it to the vintage Kenner Rancor or even the Power of the Force 2 Rancor, you can see just how much toys have changed.

It’s quite a bit bigger than the original rancor (see this comparison shot) and it’s completely painted from head to toe. And the paint is pretty well done, which is something that you can’t say about a lot of factory painted toys. It’s a little rough if you look closely, but the overall effect is quite nice.

I should note, however, that the paint job on my boxed figure, which you see in the first photo above, is noticeably different from the one on my loose Rancor. It’s got a lot more dry-brushing, which lets you see the details more, but also makes it seem lighter in color.

The sculpt is quite impressive. I think it compares favorably to the AMT/ERTL model kit, which is one my favorite Rancor sculpts.

This was a Target exclusive figure, and originally sold for $40. Partway through, they raised the price to $50 and after passing it up at $40 I could never bring myself to buy it for the higher price. Luckily, exclusives like this often end up on clearance. I was never able to find it on clearance at my Target, but I was able to get it for a pretty good price on ebay because of all of the people buying them up to resell.

rancor_mouth

As you can see above, the mouth opens and closes, which is a nice touch that harkens back to the vintage figure. They even used real metal for the earring and chain on his wrist cuff. The back of the box says that he features “rancor grip” which I guess is true. He can hold a figure such as the included Jedi Luke, fairly well.

Vintage Rancor Monster Figure by Kenner

February 14, 2010

This is the original Rancor monster figure, and it’s really quite impressive for the time. It’s impressively large, and has a decent action feature (press the button on his back to make his mouth open and close).

The paint is a little plain (basically it’s all just brown plastic with a couple of painted accents like the teeth and eyes) but that was the norm for the time. I don’t think I ever actually had this toy as a child, so it was nice to pick this up on ebay a few weeks ago.

Here’s the original commercial that aired in Britain. I can’t seem to find if there was an American equivalent.

Slobba the Mutt Plush (Farce Wars: Fantom Meanies)

February 14, 2010

This is one of a line of Star Wars parody plushes that came out around the time of the Phantom Menace. Slobba the Mutt is a fat dog with no hind legs — he has a Jabba-like tail instead. He is accompanied by “Chihuahua Crud” (Salacious Crumb) holding a taco. It’s sort of cute, although I can’t help but think that they could have done a bit better job making it look like Jabba. As it is, you sort of have to explain to people what it is, since at first glance it just looks like a stuffed dog. The tag reads:

“This dog is not fat, he’s big boned.
And his temper is worse than Capone’s.
Take down his order.
Make a run for the border.
‘Cause he can’t get his butt off the throne!”

Jabba the Hutt KFC Trading Card

This is one of 20 trading cards that KFC put out in the UK during the hoopla that surrounded the release of The Phantom Menace.

Jabba the Hutt Sketch Card by Spencer Brinkerhoff

Here’s a great sketch card done by Spencer Brinkerhoff. I hope he’ll eventually make a print that features Jabba’s throne room.

“Hutt Parking Only” Aluminum Sign by Graffitiworks

February 10, 2010

I got this from a seller on ebay who apparently specializes in novelty parking signs. I don’t think any of them are licensed, but they are pretty cute. I thought this one would be appropriate to have around my Jabba stuff. 😉 It’s the same size as a real parking sign, so it’s really quite large. The “huttese” at the bottom means “there will be no bargain.”

Pepsi Jabba the Hutt, Bib Fortuna, Gamorrean Guard, and Oola Bottle Toppers

February 10, 2010

I’ve had the Japanese Jabba the Hutt Pepsi bottle topper for a while, but on my recent trip to Japan I discovered that they actually made another Jabba bottle topper, as well as several characters from Jabba’s palace. These were only available if you saved up some points that came on Pepsi bottles and then sent away for them. They had several other sets available as well. It’s a little too bad that they included the Biker Scout in this set rather than going for a completely Jabba-based one.

As you can see in this comparison picture, the Jabba in this set is a lot bigger than the one that was commonly available, although the two of them may share the same head sculpt. It’s also nice to get an Oola, since collectibles based on her are relatively rare.

Max Rebo Band Kubricks

February 10, 2010

I mentioned a while ago that Medicom Toy is coming out with a wave of Kubrick figures based on Jabba’s Palace later this year. I’m definitely getting those and I have the other Jabba-themed Kubricks (Slave Leia, Gamorrean Guard, Han in Carbonite, Lando as Skiff Guard, and Leia as Boushh — plus the Jawa and Boba Fett, which could fit in at Jabba’s Palace). However, I was never able to get the Max Rebo Band set. It was exclusively sold on the Medicom website in Japan, so it’s quite a bit harder to find than normal Kubricks. I finally found one of these during my trip to Nakano Broadway in Tokyo. It was expensive, but less than they’ve been going for on ebay (they’ve recently been topping $200). I expect these to only get more expensive once the Jabba’s Palace wave of Kubricks comes out, so I’m glad I got one.

It comes with Max Rebo and his piano (it’s a separate piece), Sy Snootles, Droopy McCool and Doda Bodonawieedo, as well as their respective instruments (or mic in Sy’s case). As you may know, the band originally only had the first three characters, with Doda being added for the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi in 1997. I’m not sure why they decided to add him to this set, but he’s a pretty nice figure in any case. They come with a glossy cardboard backdrop that you can pose them on.

Jabba the Hutt Birthday Cake

February 7, 2010

This is my birthday cake this year. A friend of the family kindly made this for us and I think she did a fantastic job (she also made an iPhone cake for me 3 years ago). My four-year-old son likes Jabba’s son Rotta and requested that the cake have Jabba and Rotta hugging, so that’s what we did. 🙂 Jabba is made of chocolate cake, chocolate fudge, and fondant. More pictures below. If this is your first time here, welcome! The best place to start is with my Collection List, which is a visual overview of my collection with lots of thumbnail photos.
