Hasbro Clone Wars Rotta the Hutt (and Ahsoka Tano)

October 2, 2009

This was one of the first figures in Hasbro’s Clone Wars line of 3 3/4″ figures, and I swear it’s the hardest to find. I looked all over for one before finally breaking down and buying one on ebay for more than double retail. It’s a really nice figure, and the addition of Ahsoka seals the deal. What’s that you say? Ahsoka is actually the main figure and Rotta is the bonus? Yeah right. 😀

Anyway, Ahsoka is a pretty good representation of the CGI model, and the paint is well done. The only real problem is that the backpack with Rotta in it tends to make the figure a tad back-heavy.

Power of the Force 2 Jabba the Hutt by Kenner

October 2, 2009

potf2_jabba_box_b2

This is definitely my least favorite Jabba figure, although that’s partially due to the fact that it’s based on the CGI version of Jabba from the “Special Edition” of “A New Hope.” I was also completely away from Star Wars collecting during the time it came out, so I have no nostalgia for it at all. It’s made out of a very hard plastic, unlike the softer rubbery materials used for most Jabba figures, and the paint job is pretty unimpressive. It’s just a pinkish color sprayed on top of the dark green plastic of the body. (EDIT: I later repainted and modified one of these.)

It has an action feature (turn torso to make tail move) but it makes it impossible to position his tail horizontally from his body, which is how we usually picture Jabba (and makes it very difficult to use the figure with the cardboard throne room playset that they released around the same time).

And finally, it has bizarre plastic eyes that have been inserted into its head, giving the effect of one of those paintings with the moving eyes in haunted houses. They may have been trying a sort of homage to the vintage figure (which also had plastic eyes inserted into the head) but it worked much better with the older figure.

You can also see some very obvious mold lines on the body and head. Using a rotocast mold prevented that problem on the head of the vintage figure. All in all, I’m not a fan of this figure at all, but it is interesting to see how the figures have evolved over the years.

EDIT: Here’s a YouTube video I made about this figure.

Hasbro Ultra Jabba the Hutt Figure (“Jabba’s Palace”)

September 26, 2009

I’m not really sure what makes this “ultra” but it is one of the better Jabba figures. It’s almost the same sculpt as the Jabba Glob figure, although the face seems to have been reworked somewhat. It looks more like the ROTJ Jabba, although it’s still a little odd looking in places. They made a hole in the side of his mouth where you can stick his tongue, or you can remove it and put the pipe there instead.

The paint is totally different, and considerably better than the other figure. They did a reasonably good job with the orange-tan color, but I would’ve preferred that there not be such a hard line between it and the green. Still, it’s a good effort. I also repainted one of these.

He also comes with his throne railing and pipe, and a bag of froggy snacks. I really wish Hasbro would go back to making the full throne.

Hallmark “Max Rebo Band” Keepsake Ornaments

September 25, 2009

This set is one of many Star Wars themed Christmas tree ornaments that Hallmark has put out over the years (these are from 1999). I got these guys very cheaply on ebay and I wasn’t expecting to be very impressed with them, but wow they are very well done, especially when you consider their tiny size. As you can see by the quarter that Sy Snootles is standing on, they are less than 1 inch tall. But despite their small size, they have excellent sculpts and paint jobs. I’ll definitely have to look into getting some more in this line.

Vintage Sigma Ceramic Jabba the Hutt Bank

September 23, 2009

This is a really nice piece. It’s quite a bit larger than I had expected. It’s around 7 inches tall by 6 inches wide and 5 inches deep. And yes, it’s a bank (although I have no intention of using it as such). You put the coins in Jabba’s mouth and can remove them through a hole in the bottom that’s covered by a rubber stopper. The paint is pretty nicely done, considering the medium it’s in. Sigma actually made an entire line of Jabba-related ceramic pieces, including Bib Fortuna, Leia as Boushh, and a Gamorrean Guard, among others. I’m tempted to pick them all up. I do already have the R2-D2 and C-3PO piece.

While this one is a bank, the other ones in the series are just ceramic statues that have no other purpose, and in that sense they are a little strange. I’m not sure who the original audience for these was. They look like something my mother might collect, if the subject matter was different.

Slave Leia Accessory Pack for Gentle Giant Jabba Statue

September 22, 2009

Got the Slave Leia pack for the Gentle Giant Jabba today (Gentle Giant is running a 50% sale on this and other items on their site). The pack includes Leia, a fur rug for her to lie on, an extra pillow, the top of Jabba’s water pipe, and two new arms for Jabba (one that can hold Leia’s chain and one that holds the pipe). I didn’t try very hard to separate them, but it looked to me like the arm with the pipe is permanently attached to the top of the water pipe, so you can’t use the other arm (holding one of his froggy snacks) if you want the top of the water pipe to be on the throne. I always felt like the throne looked a little incomplete without the pipe, so I’m glad to get this if for no other reason.

It’s a nice enough piece. The likeness to Carrie Fisher is not really there, but it looks good for the size. I’m keeping both Oola and Leia on the throne even though it messes a bit with continuity, since Oola is too nice to put away.

Hasbro 12″ Gamorrean Guard (Repaint)

September 20, 2009

Continuing with our Gamorrean Guard theme, we have the 12″ Gamorrean Guard from Hasbro. I repainted this, because the original factory paint was pretty terrible. The hard part about repainting this figure is that they sewed him into his outfit, so you either have to remove some of the stitching in the back or paint around the outfit somehow. I did the former. I guess the sandals are supposed to be black, not brown, but I think I’ll just leave them like this.

The figure itself is actually pretty nice. The sculpt is great. It’s basically a rotocast-type figure, so it’s got relatively little articulation. Just joints for the head, shoulders, wrists, and hips. But it’s functional enough. Until Sideshow’s version comes out, I’ll be using this in my Jabba display. And I may even use them both if they aren’t too different in size.

Mighty Muggs Gamorrean Guard

September 20, 2009

I have all of the Star Wars Mighty Muggs, but this is definitely one of my favorites. It’s the only Jabba-related Mugg in the collection (unless you want to count C-3PO or Boba Fett). I’d like to try and customize a Mighty Muggs Jabba, as well as some of the other characters, but that will be something of a challenge. You can’t see it in this picture, but they even applied a little clear gloss to his lower lip to simulate trails of drool.

“Knockin’ on Jabba’s Door” Print by Dave Dorman

September 20, 2009

This was a print that Dave Dorman apparently sent to people who had preordered his Jabba’s palace print, in order to make up for some delays. Hopefully I’ll be getting that print soon as well. (EDIT: I did get it later on. Here’s the entry for it.)

It captures the moment when C-3PO and R2-D2 knock on Jabba’s door and talk with his droid doorman (or whatever that is). It’s an 11×14 print and was limited to 400 pieces.

Rotta the Hutt Sketch Card By Tim Proctor

September 20, 2009

Here’s a sketch of Rotta done by Tim Proctor. Tim was recently featured by his local paper when he went back to his old high school to talk to kids about a career in art.
