Update: Painted AMT/ERTL Jabba

November 16, 2009

I wrote about the AMT/ERTL Jabba the Hutt Throne Room Action Scene a while back. I had come to the conclusion that it wouldn’t be worthwhile to paint up the entire model because the base that it comes with is made of such flimsy plastic. Plus, many of the figures are very low in detail. Instead, I decided to convert just the throne portion so that it could stand by itself. The sculpts aren’t great, but it was still kind of fun working in this scale again. I started out painting 25mm models.
These models are made of injection molded plastic and most of them consist of two half pieces that you put together, so there are sometimes gaps or extra plastic. I did a lot of scraping of mold lines. With Jabba in particular, I had to use some epoxy putty to fill in the gaps.

Here is a 3 3/4″ figure for scale.

LEGO Jabba Sail Barge, Skiff, and Sarlacc (Set 6210)

November 16, 2009

old_lego_barge

This is the biggest and most expensive of the LEGO Jabba sets. It came out in 2006, so it’s been out of production for a while, and can go for more than $200 on ebay in complete condition. I ended up buying mine without the mini-figures for a good price because I couldn’t justify paying the prices the complete set was going for. (See the entry about the store display model that I got later on for shots of the figures it comes with.)

It’s an impressive set. It’s about a foot and a half long, and opens up on hinges on both sides to reveal Jabba’s mobile throne room, a galley, and a brig. It also comes with the skiff (with a gangplank that folds out).

And finally, it includes the sarlacc.

Disney Collector Pack Jabba the Hutt

November 16, 2009

This is a tiny figure that is apparently only sold at Disney resorts. It’s part of a series of figures that includes the usual Star Wars characters, as well as some Disney characters in Star Wars garb. It’s less than an inch long, so while the paint doesn’t look great in this picture, it’s actually not too bad in person.

Titanium Skiff & Sail Barge Die-cast Models

November 16, 2009

These are part of Hasbro’s long-running Titanium series of die-cast models. They’re about two inches long and are made mostly of metal. The skiff is actually pretty nice. There’s a lot of detail. The sail barge, on the other hand, seems kind of drab. There’s some molded detail, but it seems rather monochromatic.

LEGO Jabba’s Palace

November 12, 2009

This is one of several Jabba-themed sets put out by LEGO a few years ago. They’re all out of production now and relatively expensive on the secondary market. It comes with a number of mini-figures: Jabba, Slave Leia, aB’Omarr Monk, Jedi Luke, a gonk droid, and EV-9D9. It has an opening trap for Luke to fall in, and the front part splits open to reveal the “dungeon” area. Also of note is the fact that the LEGO Jabba has a belly button. 🙂

(EDIT: I’ve added entries for the Jabba’s Prize and Jabba’s Message expansion sets, including a picture of the complete palace on the page for Jabba’s Message.)

Repaint: Vintage Jabba the Hutt

November 12, 2009

I also repainted the vintage Jabba figure. Since he has plastic lensed eyes, I had to cover them up with epoxy putty, and I also closed up the indentation in his mouth where the pipe can go. The vintage Jabba is actually a pretty good sculpt, but it doesn’t paint up quite as nicely as the Ultra Jabba because of the articulation.

Most of you probably won’t be able to do much more than look at the pictures, but as a translator I do read Japanese and I loved looking through this site. It’s run by someone who’s as big a fan of Jabba as I am.

My sister and I were joking about someone having a Jabba the Hutt wedding cake just the other day, and it turns that that someone has already done it. Well done!

Vintage Jabba the Hutt Puzzle

November 6, 2009

This is a 12″ x 16″ puzzle with 70 pieces. I don’t have a lot to say about this, except that it’s more difficult to put together than you might think because so many of the pieces are so dark in color.

Micro Machines Planet Tatooine Playset

November 6, 2009

This is similar the other Micro Machines playsets I have, except that it doesn’t transform, and in that sense it’s a bit less interesting. But it does feature Max Rebo and Sy Snootles (who “dance” when you turn a lever on the side) and the sarlacc (who “eats” figures when you push a button).
